Why Some Hypertufa Pots Feel Alive

Table of Contents

And Others Don’t

There’s something you notice after making pots for a while.

Not all of them feel the same.

Some sit quietly in a garden…
and somehow disappear into it, as if they’ve always been there.

Others, even if well made, feel separate.
Like objects placed on top of the landscape instead of belonging to it.

The difference isn’t always easy to explain.
But you can feel it right away.

It’s not just the recipe

You can follow the same proportions.
Use the same materials.
Even the same mold.

And still… the result can feel completely different.

Because what gives life to a hypertufa pot
is not only what goes into it.

It’s how it’s handled.

Surfaces that breathe

A pot that feels alive is rarely perfect.

It has:

  • slight irregularities
  • soft variations in texture
  • edges that aren’t overly sharp

The surface catches light in different ways.
It creates shadows.
It changes depending on the time of day.

That’s what makes it feel natural.

Too smooth… and it becomes silent.
Too perfect… and it feels closed.

Letting time do its work

One of the hardest things to accept is this:

You don’t finish a hypertufa pot.

You begin it.

Time continues the work:

  • rain softens it
  • sun warms it
  • small traces appear

Little by little, it settles into its place.

A pot that feels alive is one that was allowed
to become part of something… not just made.

A quieter way of making

Over time, I stopped trying to control everything.

I stopped chasing perfect symmetry.
Stopped correcting every small imperfection.

And something changed.

The pots started to feel calmer.
More grounded.
More… present.

Maybe that’s the difference

A hypertufa pot doesn’t need to stand out.

It needs to belong.

And when it does,
you don’t really notice it at first.

You just feel that something is right.
